The pilot pin does three jobs on every cut: it centres the annular cutter on the marked hole position, it carries cutting lubricant down the centre of the cutter to the cutting edge, and at the end of the cut its spring ejects the slug clear of the bore. Match the pin length to the depth of cut of the cutter in use — a 35 mm DoC cutter takes a 90 mm pin, a 55 mm DoC cutter takes a 110 mm pin.
